Switzerland-based technology group ABB has revealed new software that will enhance underground mining safety and productivity.

Mine Location Intelligence (MLI), the group’s latest technology, provides 3-D, real-time positioning and location of vehicles, equipment, and personnel in working underground mines. Features such as spatial search, navigation support, advanced data mining and analysis, and creation and management of geofences help to assist in safety and productivity for mining companies.

"This will change how mines are operated and will be an important tool for increased safety and production efficiency,” said Patrik Westerlund, global product manager of ABB integrated mine automation.

Westerlund believes MLI will help customers visualize their mining operations to reach a new level of situation awareness.

The software’s ability to automatically survey mine sites allows companies to prevent workers from moving to dangerous areas in the event of an accident or disaster.

Productivity is increased through the software’s real-time location information, allowing production to be controlled and automated on demand. Communication is also enhanced through the use of integrated voice, message and CCTV services for employees in underground mines.

Earlier this year the technology group announced it was investing $2 billion in smart technology in China over ten years. ABB Group operates in roughly 100 countries and is a global leader in power and automation technologies.
