One of the worlds leading mine services providers has been awarded an underground mining contract for one of Australia’s largest undeveloped copper deposits.

Downer EDI, one Australia’s leading diversified mining contractors, has announced that it has been awarded a six-year mining services contract with Oz Minerals valued at $660 million.

The contract will see Downer EDI deliver underground mining services at the company’s Carrapateena copper-gold project in South Australia.

Downer will be tasked with site setup and development to the top of the ore body and infrastructure excavation, production set up and ramp up as well as bedding in steady-state operations at nameplate site capacity.

The company will begin work at the site from July 2018.

The Chief Executive Officer of Downer, Grant Fenn, said Downer was pleased to be expanding its relationship with OZ Minerals at Carrapateena, which is located approximately 160 kilometres north of Port Augusta in South Australia.

“This new contract is an excellent example of the breadth of services we can offer to customers in the mining and resources sector,” Mr Fenn said. “We look forward to working closely with OZ Minerals to ensure this important project is delivered safely and efficiently.”

Located in South Australia on the eastern margin of the Gawler Craton, and with a 4.225 Mtpa underground operation over a mine life of 20 years, Carrapateena is one of Australia’s largest undeveloped copper deposits.

The project is currently made up of two parts, Phase one (underway) which will see the construction commences on the accommodation village and airstrip, and development of the dual access decline continues. 

Phase two, which subject to a mining lease and targeted for Q4 2018, will include the phase two includes construction of above ground infrastructure, processing plant, tailings storage facility, western access road, power line and installation of the underground materials handling system.
